Ganga Quest, a national online quiz on Ganga, was organised by TREE Craze Foundation, a Section-8 company and National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG), an authority under the Ministry of Jal Shakti, Government of India. The unique feature of the quiz were: a) It was conducted in both Hindi and English; b) it was an online quiz with no paper wasted in printing of quiz and answer sheets; and, c) it was a pan-India quiz with considerable participation from non-Ganga Basin States.
Ganga Quest was organised under the Namami Gange Programme to increase the connection of people to our national river, Ganga. Wildlife Institute of India, GIZ (The Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH), and VA Tech Wabag Ltd., partnered with NMCG and TCF in this endeavour. The analytics of participation and results showed that an online quiz with an informative feedback mechanism can be a very effective way to increase awareness along with enhancing public participation in a Government program. Also the enthusiasm across the nation for Ganga Quest highlighted the relevance of notifying River Ganga as our national river. The attitude survey clearly showed a need of an awareness drive and more effective program of enhancing people-river connect. Also, the analysis highlighted that the efforts should not be restricted to increasing awareness but must move towards action and advocacy, as majority of participants showed willingness to join voluntarily in an effort to restore rivers but also admitted they are not aware how they can participate. The feedback of the participants also stated that they felt strongly that this quiz has increased their knowledge on environment, rivers, and Ganga.'
